At the end of the Basic Mediation Training you will be assigned a small mentored apprenticeship group. Your mentor will guide you through 13 weeks of structured learning, focusing in the different skills you will need to practice mediation on your own. You will observe community cases, participate in role plays and co-mediate. Apprentices will receive verbal and written feedback from their mentor and their peer group.
At the end of these 13 weeks, your mentor and the Program Director will discuss your readiness to be observed. Feedback will be given after this first session and you will be scheduled for co-mediations to practice the areas that need improvement.
Once you have been approved to mediate on your own, you must mediate 12 cases at the Center within one year to become fully certified (*).
Upon a successful observation, evaluation, and completion of the apprenticeship program, the Queens Mediation Network will certify you as a mediator (**).
Congratulations!
(*) Currently mediators can be certified by the Centers for whom they mediate, not by New York State.
(**) The completion of the apprenticeship program does not guarantee your mediator’s certification with the Queens Mediation Network.
