Interpreters/Translators Needed  (Unpaid)

At this time, only Spanish Interpreters/Translators are needed.

End Date:           December, 2014 (longer if the intern wants to stay on and the agency agrees)

Approximately 138 languages are spoken in Queens (according to NY State Comptroller).

CMS is looking for interns who are bilingual or multilingual.  Do you speak any of the following?

  1. Spanish
  2. Chinese
  3. Korean
  4. Italian
  5. Greek
  6. Russian
  7. Tagalog (Filipino)
  8. French Creole
  9. Another language


Interpreters/Translators are needed to assist during mediations.

Additionally, the work may include:

● promoting various types of mediation

● outreach/recruitment of program participants

● translating brochures and other materials

● occasionally attending workshops and meetings

● phone calls, emails and in-person meetings

● writing correspondence

● assisting at trainings

● research using the internet

● development of new trainings and programs

● time spent in a nearby courthouse

● data entry

● occasional travel outside of Queens may be required


Skills and experience – Required:

● fluency in speaking and understanding a language other than English

● professional appearance and phone manner – strong communication skills

● computer skills (outlook and Word)

● organized, with an ability to work within deadlines


Skills and experience – Helpful, but not required:

● fluency in reading and writing a language other than English


Time required:

– As little as 3 Hours Once Per Month to Interpret;

– Between 3 and 12 hours per week for Translating, Outreach, etc.


Our core need for Interpreters is:

● Monday, Tuesday & Thursday morning from 9:30 or 10:00; and,

● either Tuesday or Wednesday evening from 5:30 til 8:00

Unpaid – but interns receive:

● free Basic Mediation Training*

● the chance to sit in/audit other trainings

● hands on experience promoting and developing new trainings/program

* Eligibility to take the training for free requires a minimum of forty (40) hours of work       for CMS acknowledged by a staff member.


CMS, located in Jamaica, Queens, has been operating for over thirty years   and has twenty-four programs.
